Will and George Climes founded the Will-George pottery in Los Angeles in 1934. For a time, Edgar Bergen, the ventriloquist who worked with Charlie McCarthy, was a partner. The company moved from Los Angeles to Pasadena in 1940. By 1948 the business had moved to San Gabriel and its name had changed to Claysmiths. But pieces were still marked Will-George. The company was best known for its bird and animal figures. It also produced vases, lamps and a series of oriental figures. It closed in 1956.
The brothers manufactured high-quality artware of porcelain and earthenware. In the late thirties their work came to the attention of actor Edgar Bergen who was impressed enough to finance their business. With the new backing, Will-George moved to a larger facility in Pasadena. There they produced an extensive line of art pottery, including very popular bird and animal figurines of exceptional quality.
In 1945 they became The Claysmiths and in 1947 became famous for their limited 200 Flamingo figure run personally commission by gangster Bugsy Siegel for his new Las Vegas Flamingo Hotel and Casino opening.
